What Is Velvet Upholstery Fabric?

Velvet is a pile fabric with a dense, soft surface and a rich, light-catching sheen. In furniture, most velvet today is made from polyester, which gives the luxurious look of traditional velvet at a practical cost and with better durability and easier care.

The character of a velvet comes from its pile, finish and base. The same construction can look completely different once it is embossed, burned out, crushed or printed, which is why velvet suits everything from classic to contemporary design.

• Plain velvet: smooth, solid-color pile in a wide range of colors. The everyday choice for sofas, chairs and cushions.
• Soft and suede-touch velvet: a matte, brushed hand with a gentle sheen. Suited to living room furniture and upholstered beds.

Tipične specifikacije

Our velvet is made from 100% polyester on a knitted base. Weights range from 110 to 450 gsm depending on style, and standard widths are 140-160 cm, with 142-145 cm the most common for sofa fabric. Backing options include T/C, nonwoven, knit, foam and cotton, chosen to suit the style and application.

Colors, finishes, prints and patterns can all be customized. Our fabrics are certified to EN, SGS and RoHS standards, and test reports are available on request. Abrasion and flame-retardant data are provided per style, so tell us your target market and we will send the matching reports. All prices are quoted FOB Ningbo or Shanghai.

What to Check Before You Buy Velvet

Weight and base. Heavier velvet with a stable base holds its shape better on sofa frames. Lighter constructions suit cushions, curtains and decorative use.

Podloga. Backing affects dimensional stability, seam strength and how the fabric handles cutting and stapling. Tell us about your frame and production process and we’ll match the backing.

Smjer i sjenčanje hrpa. Velvet looks different depending on the direction of the pile. Cut all panels of a piece in the same direction, and use fabric from a single dye lot to avoid visible color differences.

Pressure marks and crushing. All velvet can show marks where the pile is pressed. Embossed, crushed and shorter-pile styles hide this better than plain, deep-pile velvet.

What is the difference between velvet, flocked fabric and cut pile?
Velvet has a fine, dense pile with a distinctive sheen. Flocked fabric gets a velvet-like surface from short fibers bonded to a base. Cut pile is the broader family of pile fabrics with cut yarn ends, and includes velvet. We supply all three, so tell us your budget and use and we’ll recommend the best fit.

Can you match my color or make my own print?
Yes. Send a Pantone number, sample or artwork and we’ll develop it, with approval at the lab dip and strike-off stage before bulk production.

Which backing should I choose?
It depends on your frame and how you cut and staple. T/C backing is common for sofas. Nonwoven, foam or cotton backings suit other needs. Tell us your process and we’ll advise.

Do you supply velvet for car seats?
